Watching a Pond Grow

May 2008

The pond started to grow much faster in May just like it did last year. The plants all started to grow well and the pond creatures all appeared along with the ever present frogs.

This is just one of the frogs that have been in the pond most days. In this picture it appears to be sitting on water but if you look closely you will see it is a pot. Below is the frog from the other side of the pond.

I mentioned the newly dug Carnivorous plant bog in the April page so here it is. In these two pictures you can see that the plants are mostly only just waking up from their winter hibernation so they will look more impressive on the June page however I wanted to show the bog which I dug at the end of april. There was already a bog there and i had sunk a few pots with CPs in them into the ground to see if they could survive the winter before I dug them a full section. As they survived I decided to dig it fairly large so i could fit more plants in the future while leaving some of the original bog intacted.

You can see the area devoted to the CP bog in this picture and the grasses etc in the other half. The CP bog is covered in moss to keep in the water and it is filled with a peat/perlite mix.

This is a better few over the whole CP bog. I have a native UK sundew and a native Butterwort in the bog along with some Sarracenia and a few other plants.

Here is a few picture of the pond from May and as you can see the plants are growing well. The only problem is that the water level is well down becuase we have had no rain for weeks so you can see about 2 inches of liner along the edge.

In June i hope to show the tadpoles as they develop legs.
