March 2010

The pond defrosted fully for the first time in a few months at the start of March. Spring started to make slight appearences and birds quickly made good use of the defrosted (if not totally freezing) water for drinking and bathing. I saw the first frog on the 1st of March which seemed amazingly early considering the winter we had been through, It stayed alone in the pond for at least a week or more until it warmed up slightly.

The first clump of Five that the pond received this year arrived on the night of the 15th. It was added to over the next few days.

Pond on the 16th.

Frog in the pond at night on the 16th.

The 17th of March was one of the craziest days the pond has seen on the Frog front. A large number of frogs, around 15 - maybe more, all went into a mating frenzy and started going crazy. Continuous choruses of croaks could be heard and the frogs didnt bother at all with people walking around the pond.

This image is my favourite of the 3. It sums up the 17th perfectly. Lots of frogs jumping around, on each other and the spawn.

So after all the craziness had died down we had recieved 5 clumps of spawn (an increase of 2 on 2009)
